ELI_galileo – v0.9.0 (MVP)

I’ve been developing a Home Automation with a Focus on Local Security and Operational Reliability.

I started this project driven by the frustration with the current industry trend of requiring cloud connectivity for basic home functionalities (e.g., the operation of certain smart lamps that would stop working if there isn’t an internet connection). This dependency creates single points of failure and compromises user privacy.

My personal home automation project has reached the MVP stage (v0.9.0). The objective is to demonstrate that robust software can overcome the limitations of legacy hardware (Intel Galileo Gen 2) and offer a local, secure, and reliable alternative.

v0.9.0 (MVP) Achievements:
– Operational Fundamentals: Implemented basic GPIO and MODBUS TCP/IP control for device management, complete with LED error signaling.
– Reliability & Durability: Used an HDD for data logging and daemon storage, mitigating SD card wear-off (a common failure point in embedded systems).
– Quality Management: Integrated GitHub Actions CI for automated unit testing, ShellCheck, CppCheck, Pylint, Pytest and build reproducibility, ensuring high-quality code.
– Field Deployment: A setup.sh script for easy SD Card image generation, simplifying field installation.

The code is available under the MIT license at GitHub aiming to encourage debate on best practices in IoT security.

The current roadmap focuses on v1.0.0, which will include IPK package management for robust updates (using SSH or an USB Storage Device), iptables configuration, static arp table and secure SSH access to further elevate system security.
